hard to be a god (2013)

A film like Hard to be a God is difficult to separate from the story of its production. Like Eyes Wide Shut, the tale isn't told without "..and did you know Kubrick died while editing it?", the same goes here. The film was shot over a period of 6 years, seemed to take another 7 to be released, and its director, who slogged through those 13 years, never lived to see it. With a film this spectacular, you'll want to include the side-note as a coda to enhance the miraculous existence of the work, of course. Hard to be a God is indescribable. Like the best of cinema, it's something to be experienced, something for which all the prose poetry that could possibly be written to aggrandize it would be a lost effort.
